EMILY'S TOP TIPS FOR TAKING THE PERFECT SELFIE

Hellooo - Happy Thursday. It’s been one of those gloriously short weeks this week hasn’t it - LOVE IT!

So, I thought I’d pop on here and do a quick blog post for you all about how to take the perfect selfie.

Nothing makes my photographic bones cringe more than seeing guests at weddings posing with their backs to a huge window attempting to get a lovely selfie, and I’ve often stepped in to give them a little helping hand but I thought I’d do it on a slightly bigger scale and write you a blog post explaining what i’m on about really.

Excuse the photos.. but it’ll help you get the gist hopefully - it’s ever so simple.

OK SO WHAT NOT TO DO

  • Don’t stand with your back to a window - back lit is only nice when it’s controlled and intentional (i.e. a silhouette type sunset picture), if you’re trying to get a selfie infront of a window you’ll end up with a low quality, blurry and hazy photo and you’ll wish you read this blog sooner haha.

  • Don’t have your camera lower than your face - simply because it ain’t a flattering angle

  • Don’t look at yourself in the screen!

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO

  • Stand with your face, facing the window OR with the light coming in from one side - As photographers we are essentially ‘painting with light’ so you need the light in order to take a decent photograph. Get that light on your face, and you’ll have a ‘gram worthy’ selfie in no time.

  • Have that arm higher than your face - It’s better for the chins darling!

  • Remember that your camera is at the top of your phone - and not in the centre of your screen. Look at the camera and not at yourself in the screen.

  • Look for the catch lights in your eyes - You should be able to see the little white dots within your eyes, this is a sign of a good photograph and something you’ll achieve if your image is correctly lit.

LIGHT FROM THE SIDE

This will create more shadows, you’ll notice the side that isn’t in the light is darker/shadowed as opposed to the side of my face that is next to the window that has highlights on it (see shiny forehead).

LIGHT FROM THE FRONT

Lighting from the front creates a ‘flat’ consistent light across your whole face.

EXTRA TOP TIP

  • GOLDEN HOUR - If you’re gonna take a selfie, do it at golden hour. You’ll not regret it! Get that golden light coming through your bedroom window and get posing your little socks off. You’ll get a gorgeous golden glow across your image.
